The Gokyo Lake Trek - 12-day officially begins from Lukla with a short, impressive mountain away from Kathmandu. Lukla is the main tourist junction of the Khumbu Valley region. It leads us through the enchanting Sherpa towns of Phakding, Namche, and Dole, Gokyo village with magical views of the north and west faces of Mt. How do we reach the Gokyo Ri Viewpoint from the Gokyo Village?

Is Gokyo Lake Trek's difficulty level related to the risk of altitude sickness?

This trek offers a unique and spectacular experience, but it also entails proper preparation and a careful approach to altitude sickness. With the accurate mind and support from expert guides and the porters' team, everyone can complete this trek.

However, the Gokyo Lake distance from Lukla to Gokyo Ri and returning the same way to Lukla is 104 km (64 miles). The trekking trails take you through the pine and rhododendron's dense forests, Rocky trails, and glacial zone.

How do you prepare for the trek?

The 12-day Gokyo trekking is a moderate to difficult trek that needs a good physical fitness level. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare yourself physical fitness level before starting your trek.  Before coming to Nepal for the trek, you can start building your stamina with regular cardio exercises like; running, Cycling, Day Hiking, and Swimming. However, every morning time you can do a morning walk of approximately 2/3 km each day, which will help for your trek. 

Some tips for the Gokyo Lake trip in Nepal:

  • Research the trekking trails and weather conditions.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat nutritious foods to keep your energy levels up.
  • Do an acclimatize to the low to high elevation and return to low altitudes.
  • Pack the necessary gear such as hiking boots, a down jacket, a sleeping bag, and warm clothing.
  • Walk slowly and continue at a high elevation.
  • Do not eat meat items, during the trek route; it might not be fresh meat.

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness):

The Gokyo Valley Trekking is rated as moderate to difficulty challenging, with the highest elevation reaching during the journey at Gokyo Ri Viewpoint, which is located at (5490 meters 18,011ft). Altitude sickness is a risk in this trekking and can affect anybody, regardless of age or fitness level.

Note: If you have any symptoms of altitude sickness then keep contacting your guide and porter teams, Our Guide is trained and he knows how to solve the (AMS) Acute mountain sickness.

The main Symptoms of altitude sickness:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficult to breath

Preventive measures:

  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages in high-elevation
  • Keep yourself hydrated
  • Acclimatize from low to high altitude and back to sleep at the low altitude.
  • Do not achieve more than 500 meters in a day
  • Do not walk very fast at high altitudes.
  • Stroll on the high elevations and keep walking.
  • Do not walk alone on the way.
  • Inform your guide as soon as you have any high altitude sickness.
  • Drink a lot of boiled water and hot tea.
  • Take garlic soup and Ginger tea; it is high altitude sickness medicine

We take a last-minute booking. However, you have to fill out the form and make the full payment of the package trip cost. Our team will be ready with you as soon as we receive your booking request.

Note: Just in case. If you want to cancel your trip, we do not refund any cash if you fail to join the trek after a last-minute booking trek with us.  

When is the best season to trek?

The best time to trek to Gokyo Lakes is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best months. During this period, the weather will be typically clear, and temperatures will be warm, making it an ideal time for trekking and tours.

Spring season:
The Mid of March makes the beginning of the spring season when the temperatures start to rise and the journey, you will able to observe the blooming of the National flower of rhododendrons such as red, white, and pink colors with many various wildflowers during the trek.

This is an outstanding time to hike in the Everest region, with moderate temperatures and clear skies. If the skies are clear then, you’ll see the spectacular mountain views of the Mount. Everest, Choyou, Nupstes, Lhotse, Pumari, Labuche Peak, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kusum kangaroo, Kongde Peak, and much more, etc.

(Summer/Monsoon) June to August:
During the summertime in Nepal, it is a rainy season; the weather is generally rainy and cloudy. It might be a high chance of Lukla's flight cancellation, due to bad weather conditions. The trekking trails can be muddy and slippery from June to August. This time is the hottest and rainfalls with several vegetation blossoms during these periods, the valley will be green and have different views of spring and autumn seasons. If you want to travel on the Gokyo Lakes in the summer season, you must be careful, while traveling along the journey, there might be slippery and muddy trails.

The temperature during the day will be warm approximately 20 to 25°C and at night and morning the temperature will be less than 7°C and most of the Night and morning time will be cold as well, you’ll be able to see the blue skies with snow-capped mountains peaks.

(Autumn) September to November:
Another best time to embark on the Gokyo is the autumn season. From September to November, the weather is clear & the mountains are observable, making it the ideal time for trekking. 

We, highly recommend exploring the Gokyo Valley trekking between mid-September and the end of November. This months are generally clear weather conditions as well, you’ll observe one of the well-known festivals falls Dashain & Tihar. These festivals are celebrated with joy and the trekking areas are filled with exciting colors and traditional festivals.

The weather conditions during this time are mild and enjoyable with typical temperatures ranging from 10 to 18 °C in the daytime, the daytime is usually warm and sunny. The Morning and night time will be -5 to -0 °C, it will be cold. Most of the time trails are dry and the views of the Himalaya’s ranges are magical.

(Winter) December to February:
During the winter season from December to February, the Gokyo Lake area experiences its snowfall period, which can be trekking at moderate to difficult levels. However, if you are planning your trip in the winter season, you must be careful along the journey. You can enjoy them from December to February. The hills will be covered with snow as well you see they look like mountain peaks, you funnier. The temperature drops off an average of -10 to -25 °C.

Accommodation during the Trek:

The accommodation along the trek consists of Guest houses and lodges. The lodges are basic comfortable lodges for trekkers. They offer common rooms with beds, blankets, mattresses, shared washrooms, and toilet facilities.

Both Guest houses and lodges offer warm hospitality. However, the facility gets basic as you have high elevations. You must pay extra for services like a hot shower, Wi-Fi, and charging port.

Foods available during the trekking:

Along the trekking route, the owner of lodges offers you the best local and western foods during the trek. You can expect to get several options like (Lunch and Dinner) Nepali Dal Bhat, Noodles, and MO: MO, Spaghetti, Macaroni, Fried rice, Fried potatoes, Chowmin, Sherpa Thukpa, and Pizza with any tea.

Breakfast Items:
Oat Porridge, Banana and apple pancake, Muesli with Jam/honey, Tibetan bread, Noodle soup, Chapatti with fried eggs with Tea and Coffee.

Permits:

The Gokyo Lake trek for 12 days requires two types of permits, both permits will cover the whole Everest region trekking, but if you want to climb the peak, you have to buy another peak climbing permit.

  • Pasang Lhamu community fee 20 U$D per head.
  • Sagarmatha National Park Fee 30 U$D Per head.

Tips for Guide and Porters:

Our package trip does not include tipping for the staff (Guide, Porter, and Driver). We want to recommend tips for your staff, as you wish. If you are with a group then per head member can contribute an amount and collectively tip our staff field team members. You can hand it over at the end of your trip.
